The Surging Style Trend of Bows in Fashion

Bows have been around in the fashion industry forever, but it’s all I can see lately. The humble bow. Once relegated to childhood dressing or a symbol of demure femininity, the bow is now adorning everything from casual denim to red-carpet gowns, taking centre stage with a newfound versatility. 

This trend transcends a specific era or silhouette. For Spring/Summer 24’ we saw dramatic bows at Molly Goddard, at Rodarte bows reminiscent of the 18th century-adorned whimsical dresses, while Prada and Chanel offered a more contemporary take with sleek satin bows accenting structured jackets. Street style icons are rocking deconstructed bow blouses paired with bloomer shorts, proving the bow's adaptability to modern aesthetics. We also saw Sarah Paulson embracing the trend with her Prada ensemble at the Met.  

The reasons behind this trend's rise are multifaceted. There's an undeniable sense of nostalgia at play.  In many parts of the world bows were a part of children’s school uniforms. After years of sleek minimalism, the bow injects a playful touch, evoking memories of childhood innocence and a carefree spirit. It resonates with a generation yearning for a departure from the anxieties of recent times. The bow also signifies a desire for individuality. Unlike a logo or trendy print, bows can be easily DIYed or customised making self-expression more accessible.  

Designers are also exploring the inherent femininity of the bow in a way that feels empowering. Gone are the days of the overly saccharine bow. Today's iterations are juxtaposed with bold prints, sharp tailoring, and unexpected fabrics, creating a powerful counterpoint. Think Simone Rocha's voluminous tulle dresses adorned with oversized bows.  

The bow's resurgence also coincides with a growing appreciation for craftsmanship and detail. In an age of mass production, a well-crafted bow adds a touch of artistry and uniqueness to a garment. It speaks to a desire for slow fashion, where garments are valued for their quality and construction, rather than fleeting trends.

Whether you prefer a statement-making oversized bow or a delicate detail on a blouse, there's a way to incorporate this playful trend into your wardrobe. So, channel your inner child, embrace the whimsy, and don't be afraid to tie yourself up in style.
